According to collision facts published by the Alberta Transportation Office of Safety, in 2013, the most recent year for which statistics are available, there were 141,638 vehicular accidents on roadways in Alberta with 18,650 injuries and 358 deaths. Almost 90 percent of these accidents, injuries and deaths were due to the negligence of at least one of the drivers involved.

The City of Edmonton, aware that serious injuries or even death can result if someone slips and falls on ice or snow, requires business and private property owners to remove snow and ice from walkways within a certain period of time after a snowfall. Owners of businesses, such as retail stores and hotels as well as apartment owners, are charged with the responsibility of also keeping their parking lots and adjacent areas free from the hazards of ice and snow.
